Developing and Improving Classification Schemes
Designing, implementing and monitoring systems to enhance information management and retrieval

Date: 27 - 29 Jun 2007
Location: Sydney, Australia
Event Type: Conference

Classification schemes are designed to give a conceptual representation of an organisation’s crucial business information and provide a structure to better locate and understand how key data can improve working practices and ROI.

Better information management can be achieved in through the implementation and monitoring of a range of systems, including taxonomies, ontologies, metadata and thesauri. However, there is often a distinct lack of understanding by stakeholders of the functions, uses and benefits of these classification schemes, leading to critical information being lost, compromised or unused. This means decision makers are often presented with information that is not a true reflection of the organisation’s status, jeopardising business function, limiting profit and restraining growth.

The task for information managers is to ensure classification systems are monitored from inception, regularly assessed, and modified where necessary to ensure they are technically accurate and up to date.

This two-day conference will assist designers, users and managers of classification schemes in:

* Establishing an effective classification scheme
* Understanding how specific schemes and structures can improve the day to day running of an organisation
* Gaining an improved understanding of how to automate systems and move classification online
* Demonstrating to key decision makers how classification schemes benefit the organisation
* Anticipating future requirements and improve the relevancy of information held in systems
